A Distress Call on the Dirt Road
A mother deer stomped her hooves into the soft dirt road, calling out with a sharp cry as vehicles slowed to a crawl.
Just inches off the shoulder, a spotted fawn was wedged upright between the twin trunks of a white birch tree.
The young animal kicked its slender rear legs, but its ribcage remained locked firmly inside the narrow wooden V-shape.
A sedan crept past, followed by a white pickup truck, their tires crunching across the dry gravel while the doe refused to leave the center of the lane.
She took two quick paces toward the passing truck, then darted back to the tree line, lowering her snout toward her trapped fawn.

The fawn strained forward, its tiny ears pinned back flat against its spotted coat as it tried to wriggle out from the bark.
Stopping to Lend a Hand
A dark green SUV pulled up directly behind the doe and shifted into park.
The driver’s side door swung open, and a woman with long silver hair stepped out onto the dirt path.
She lowered her stance immediately, keeping her shoulders relaxed as she took slow, measured steps toward the birch trees.
The mother deer took a half-step back, shifting her weight from side to side while keeping her dark eyes fixed on the woman’s hands.
The rescuer dropped to both knees on the patch of leaves and moss directly beside the fawn’s pinned legs.
She placed her left palm against the birch trunk and slid her right arm around the fawn’s chest, feeling for where the wood held it tight.
With a gentle upward lift and a slight tilt, she guided the young deer’s hips and shoulders free from the wooden notch.
Reunited at the Forest Edge
The fawn slid out onto the mossy ground, its legs instantly extending as it scrambled to find its footing.
The mother deer stepped forward right away, stretching her neck down to press her nose against the fawn’s face and flank.
She ran her tongue across the youngster’s spotted back, licking along its spine while the little deer leaned into her side.
The woman remained still on her knees, watching the pair steady themselves just feet away from the open driver door.
Reaching into her truck, the woman retrieved a plastic water bottle and poured a cool stream into a small metal bowl on the dirt.
The fawn and its mother both leaned down side by side, dipping their muzzles into the fresh water and lapping it up.
Once the bowl was empty, the doe turned toward the tall pines, leading her fawn across the mossy forest floor.
The woman picked up her bowl, climbed back behind the wheel of her green truck, and rested her arm on the open window frame with a wide smile
