A Dangerous Stumble Along The Centerline
The black and white cat stumbled sideways across the double yellow lines, its entire head wedged deep inside a metal tin can.
It swung its paws blindly against the asphalt, walking in awkward circles while oncoming vehicles approached in the distance.
A dark SUV slowed to a crawl in the oncoming lane, its hazard lights blinking as the tires rolled onto the shoulder.
The driver’s door swung open immediately.
An older man in blue jeans stepped out into the roadway, watching the cat weave erratically along the painted stripe.
Bringing The Little Stray To Safety
He crouched low, lowering his open palms near the animal’s flank.
The cat backed up sharply, disoriented by the darkness inside the metal container.
The man slid both hands gently under the cat’s belly and lifted its paws clear of the warm pavement.
He carried the squirming animal across the lane and placed his knees down in the thick grass beside the fence line.
A second man climbed out from the passenger seat, kneeling down in the dirt beside them.
He held the cat’s hind legs firmly against the ground while the first man gripped the edges of the rim.
Careful Cuts And A Safe Ride Home
The passenger reached down with a pair of heavy-duty shop shears.
He worked the lower blade between the cat’s fur and the sharp inner lip of the tin.
With small, deliberate squeezes, the steel blades sliced through the corrugated metal, parting the tin millimeter by millimeter.
The metal gave way with a faint pop, and the container slid free into the grass.
The cat blinked against the bright afternoon sun, shaking its ears and pressing its chin low.
One of the men brought out a shallow plastic tub filled with water and set it on the grass.
The cat leaned over the rim and lapped steadily, its tail resting still against the turf.
Both men stroked the cat’s back before lifting it into their arms, turning toward the open door of the SUV, and driving away down the empty rural road.
