An Unexpected Obstacle On The Road
The massive stag lay flat on the asphalt, his chest rising and falling as cars slowed to pass him.
Around his neck hung a heavy, black rubber tire, pinning his head close to the ground.
He tossed his antlers, scraping them against the wet road surface as a white SUV pulled up and stopped a few yards away.
The driver’s door opened, and a man in jeans and a black shirt stepped out onto the wet asphalt.
He walked slowly toward the deer, keeping his hands open and low at his sides.
The stag’s eyes widened, and he let out a short, raspy grunt, tensing his front legs as if trying to rise.
Each attempt to stand only caused the heavy rubber ring to dig deeper into his neck, anchoring him to the cold pavement.
The man paused his approach, waiting for the animal’s breathing to slow before taking another step forward.
Building Trust On The Wet Asphalt
The rescuer knelt in the damp grass right beside the animal’s shoulder, speaking softly as he reached out.
He placed one hand firmly on the stag’s flank to keep him grounded, while his other hand gently patted the animal’s neck.
The deer stopped thrashing, his head resting against the cold road while the man assessed the rubber collar.
It was wedged tight behind the ears, leaving no room to simply slide it off over the massive spread of antlers.
The man walked back to his vehicle, reached into the back, and pulled out a heavy orange-and-white chainsaw.
The engine roared to life, sending a high-pitched whine echoing across the open, green hills.
The stag flinched at the sudden noise, his ears twitching backward as the man approached again with the whirring blade.
He held the saw away from the animal, letting the engine idle so the deer could get used to the vibration.
A Delicate Operation With A Heavy Blade
The man knelt back down, positioning the guide bar of the chainsaw against the outer edge of the thick tire tread.
He pressed the throttle, and black rubber shavings began to spray across the wet road in a dark cloud.
The blade chewed slowly through the steel-belted rubber, just inches away from the deer’s soft throat.
The stag kept his head pressed flat against the pavement, his tongue darting out to lick his lips as the vibration rattled his frame.
The rescuer held his grip steady, keeping his body weight pressed against the deer’s shoulder to prevent any sudden movement.
With a final pull, the blade sliced completely through the first side of the tire, creating a wide gap.
The man repositioned the saw to make a second cut on the opposite side of the thick rubber ring.
Another spray of dark debris covered the road before the blade broke through the remaining synthetic fibers.
He shut off the engine, and the loud whine faded into the damp air, leaving only the sound of passing wind.
The Final Release and Return to the Wild
The man pried the two halves of the cut tire apart, lifting the heavy rubber away from the stag’s neck.
The deer immediately lifted his head, shaking his massive antlers from side to side as if testing his newfound freedom.
He scrambled his hooves against the wet pavement, pushing himself up onto his front knees.
The rescuer stepped back toward his vehicle, watching as the animal gathered his strength on the grass verge.
The stag sat upright on the grassy shoulder, shaking his head as the heavy rubber ring lay split open on the asphalt beside him.
