The dog’s paws gripped the edge of the wooden countertop as he snatched a thick, meat-filled sandwich directly from the white ceramic plate.
The baker whirled around, clutching an empty brown paper bag, only to see his freshly prepared lunch disappearing out the front door in the jaws of the brown-and-black stray.
With a shout, the silver-haired shop owner grabbed a heavy wooden rolling pin from the counter and pushed past the glass door into the bright afternoon sun.
He sprinted down the sidewalk, his heavy leather boots pounding against the pavement as he tracked the dog’s rapid pace.

The dog darted down a narrow concrete alley, holding the massive sub firmly but carefully between his teeth without dropping a single slice of meat.
The baker followed closely behind, splashing through a deep, muddy puddle that soaked his denim jeans, his jaw clenched with determination to retrieve his stolen property.
Following The Trail To An Abandoned RV
The chase led out of the busy commercial district and into an overgrown lot filled with discarded debris and rusted vehicles.
The dog leaped through the open door of a badly weathered, white-and-brown recreational vehicle with broken windows.
The baker stopped at the threshold, holding his heavy rolling pin high in his right hand as he stepped inside, his chest heaving from the long run.
His eyes adjusted to the dim light inside the cramped cabin, and his arm slowly began to lower.
On a dirty, bare mattress in the corner of the vehicle sat a young man with tangled, unwashed hair and dirt smeared across his cheeks.
His left leg was stretched out in front of him, wrapped in a thick, gray plaster cast that was heavily scuffed and stained.
An Unexpected Turn Of Events
The dog walked up to the mattress and gently laid the hot sandwich down onto the man’s lap, nudging it forward with his nose.
The young man stared at the food, his lower lip trembling as tears welled up in his eyes, before looking up to meet the baker’s gaze.
He placed a hand on the dog’s head, whispering an apology to his pet for failing to provide for him, before turning his attention back to the shop owner.
“We don’t take what isn’t ours,” the young man said, his voice cracking as he lifted the sandwich to hand it back. “Take it back, please.”
The baker took a step closer, but instead of taking the food, he gently pushed the young man’s hands back down.
“Eat,” the baker said softly. “And come to my back door tomorrow morning.”
