A Perilous Stand On The Asphalt
Three tiny ducklings huddled tightly against the gravel shoulder of a mountain road, nudging a grey pigeon lying flat on its back.
White paint marked the edge of the travel lane just inches from their downy yellow heads. Traffic hummed past at full speed, sending gusts of wind that ruffled their soft feathers.
The pigeon showed no obvious signs of movement under the bright sun. Its pink feet pointed upward into the air, completely still while the ducklings circled around its motionless body.
A white sedan sped past, its tires skimming the white line. Moments later, a dark black SUV slowed down, pulled over onto the narrow shoulder, and came to a stop.
An Unexpected Roadside Check
The SUV’s door opened, and a man in a black polo shirt stepped onto the asphalt carrying two clear plastic bottles filled with water.
He walked directly toward the shoulder, keeping his eyes fixed on the small bundle of yellow ducklings and the fallen grey bird.
He crouched down on both knees beside the road, lowering his frame to meet the animals at eye level. The ducklings chirped softly, shifting their weight between webbed feet as he set one bottle down against the gravel.
Twisting the cap off the second bottle, he tilted the plastic rim over the bird. Clear water began to stream directly over the pigeon’s grey chest and folded wings.
The water soaked through the dry feathers, pooling slightly along the asphalt edge. The man gently tipped the bottle again, letting a slow drip run down toward the bird’s head and closed eyes.
A Sudden Shift
The pigeon’s chest rose suddenly. A wing twitched outward against the black gravel, breaking its stillness.
Within seconds, the bird rolled its weight over, planted both feet firmly onto the asphalt, and shook the moisture from its neck.
The ducklings immediately pressed closer, scurrying right up to the grey pigeon’s side as it stood upright in the sun.
The man set a shallow transparent plastic tub onto the roadway and poured fresh water into it, tapping his index finger gently against the surface to create small ripples.
The ducklings dipped their bills straight into the clear pool, tilting their heads back to swallow. The pigeon stood alert right beside them, observing every movement.
Sharing A Meal By The Road
The man reached into his pocket and opened his palm, presenting a handful of crumbled bread and seeds.
He lowered his flat hand directly in front of the small flock. The pigeon stepped forward and began pecking at the grain scattered across his fingers.
Following closely behind, the three ducklings crowded around the edge of his palm, picking up crumbs from the asphalt and his open hand side by side with the grey bird.
The man stayed crouched low beside his vehicle, watching as the three ducklings and the standing pigeon pecked the last seeds from the edge of his fingers.
