A Quiet Morning On The Corner
A man in a military jacket sits in a manual wheelchair on a busy city sidewalk. His prosthetic legs are visible beneath his shorts. Next to him, a medium-sized brown and white dog lies flat against the concrete, its chin resting near its paws. The city traffic moves behind them, a blur of yellow taxis and gray concrete.
The man keeps his eyes fixed on the oncoming flow of traffic. He sits upright, his shoulders squared. He watches the rhythm of the city. Pedestrians pass them by, walking with their heads down or looking at their phones.
The dog shifts its weight. It lifts its head, ears perking up as a large blue bus rumbles toward the stop. The dog rises to its feet, tail beginning to twitch. It lets out a short, sharp bark, looking toward the approaching vehicle.
The Bus Approaches
The bus pulls closer to the curb. The dog moves forward, tail wagging with a steady, rhythmic beat. It turns back toward the man, then looks at the driver through the large windshield. The dog trots toward the edge of the street, its head tilted as the doors fold outward.
The driver steps down from his seat. He wears a bright neon orange vest over his blue work shirt. He checks the mirror and leans out of the open door, scanning the sidewalk. His gaze settles on the man in the wheelchair. The driver does not hesitate. He moves down the bus stairs with purpose, heading directly toward the man waiting at the stop.
A Helping Hand
The driver reaches the man and leans in. He places a hand on the wheelchair, securing it. He adjusts the angle of the chair, carefully maneuvering it toward the open bus entrance. The man in the jacket smiles, his face brightening as the driver leans in to assist him.
The transition is smooth. The driver pushes the wheelchair toward the bus, guiding the wheels over the threshold. Once inside, the man settles into the designated space. He reaches down and brushes his hand over the dog’s head.
The dog sits obediently beside the wheelchair. The man leans forward, his fingers rhythmically stroking the dog’s fur behind its ears. The man looks up at the rows of passengers sitting in the bus. He shifts his weight in the seat and offers a brief nod to those around him.
A Shared Commute
The bus remains still for a moment. The interior is bathed in the soft glow of the city light filtering through the windows. The man keeps his hand resting on the dog’s back. The dog remains calm, its eyes following the movement of the driver returning to his station.
The bus doors hiss shut. The engine hums, and the vehicle begins to pull away from the curb. The man continues to pet the dog, his thumb moving in small circles against the animal’s shoulder. He stares out the window as the city buildings slide past, his hand never leaving the dog’s soft coat.
The dog looks up at the man, its tail thumping once against the floor of the bus. The man reaches down and gently scratches the dog’s chest, his fingers moving slowly through the fur. The bus speeds up, the vibration of the road humming through the metal floor beneath them.
The man leans back, his arm draped over the back of the wheelchair. He watches the passengers, his expression relaxed as the bus continues on its route through the center of the city. The camera captures the two of them, man and dog, sitting side by side in the center of the aisle as the bus carries them forward.
