Injured Turtle Stranded on Its Back Receives a Healing Hand Just in Time

A Stranded Traveler in Need

The black SUV slowed to a crawl as a massive turtle lay completely upside down on the gravel shoulder.

Its pale plastron was fully exposed to the midday sun, showing a raw, red scrape across the center of its shell.

Two smaller turtles stood close by, pressing their shells against their giant companion as if trying to shield it from passing traffic.

The car door swung open, and a man in a brown polo shirt and dark jeans stepped out onto the paved road.

He walked slowly toward the edge of the asphalt, his eyes locked on the upside-down reptile.

The giant snapping turtle flailed its thick, clawed legs in the air, unable to find any leverage on the loose stones.

Its tail dragged in the dirt, and its head strained backward as it tried to flip its heavy body over.

The man stopped a foot away, assessing the weight of the animal and the severity of the red wound on its chest.

He lowered himself to the ground, his knees pressing into the sharp gravel beside the road.

Treating the Wound

He reached down and pulled a brown plastic squeeze bottle from his pocket.

The turtle hissed softly, its mouth opening slightly as the shadow of the man fell over its body.

He squeezed a generous stream of thick white cream directly onto the blood-red scrape in the center of the shell.

With a calm, steady hand, he began to spread the cool ointment across the rough surface of the plastron.

The white cream coated the raw edges of the scrape, sealing the exposed tissue from the dry air and dust.

The two smaller turtles did not retreat; instead, they watched the man’s fingers move across the giant shell.

He worked the cream into the deep crevices of the shell, ensuring every part of the scrape was fully covered.

The giant turtle’s limbs gradually relaxed, its sharp claws settling against its sides as the cooling substance took effect.

Once the injury was sealed, the man positioned his hands on either side of the wide, serrated shell.

The Long Walk to Safety

He gripped the edges tightly, lifting the heavy reptile off the gravel with a slow, controlled effort.

The turtle immediately began to claw the air, its thick legs paddling back and forth as it rose above the ground.

The man walked with wide steps, carrying the large animal across the asphalt toward the green grassy slope.

The gravel crunched beneath his boots as he navigated the uneven descent toward the water.

Ahead lay a wide, blue lake bordered by tall pine trees under a clear summer sky.

As he neared the shore, three other turtles could be seen waiting in the short grass near the water’s edge.

They sat perfectly still, their dark shells glistening in the sun as they watched the man approach with their companion.

He knelt once more in the soft mud at the edge of the lake, his boots sinking slightly into the wet earth.

He lowered the giant turtle until its front claws touched the cool, clear water.

With a gentle push, he released his grip and watched the heavy shell slide into the shallows.

The turtle kicked its webbed feet, gliding forward into the lake and leaving a soft wake behind it as it swam away.

The man watched from the muddy bank as the dark shell slipped beneath the surface of the lake.
