The Desperate Cry for Help
The roar of passing traffic was a constant reminder of how close the end was. Tangled in a web of thick, orange and green netting, a majestic peacock lay pinned to the dusty earth. Every time a car sped by, the bird let out a piercing, rhythmic scream, a sound that carried across the dry landscape but seemed to fall on deaf ears.
Dust kicked up by a passing truck swirled around the bird’s iridescent blue neck. It couldn’t move its wings. It couldn’t run. It could only wait and hope that the next set of tires wouldn’t veer too close to the shoulder.

A Hero on the Horizon
Suddenly, the sound of a braking vehicle broke the cycle of despair. A white SUV pulled off the pavement, coming to a stop just feet from the trapped creature. A man stepped out, his eyes fixed on the struggling bird. He didn’t just look; he acted. Kneeling in the dirt, he reached out a hand to steady the panicked animal, ignoring the frantic pecking and the sharp cries that echoed through the air.
Out came a pair of yellow-handled scissors. With the steady hand of someone who knew exactly what was at stake, he began the delicate process of liberation. Snip by snip, the constraints fell away. The peacock’s chest began to heave with a different kind of energy as the weight of the net lifted.
The Sweet Taste of Freedom
With one final cut, the man pulled the mass of twine away. The peacock stood up, its long, emerald tail feathers trailing behind it as it took its first free steps in who knows how long. It didn’t bolt immediately. Instead, it stayed close as the man brought out a large plastic container filled with clear, cool water.
The bird dipped its beak, drinking deeply as its rescuer watched with a quiet smile. In the middle of a busy thoroughfare, a life had been reclaimed. The man stood back, watching as the peacock regained its strength, a vibrant splash of color against the brown road, ready to return to the wild where it belonged.
