A Tangle In The Snow
A young wolf cub frantically pulls at the thick, heavy netting wrapped tightly around its body. The creature twists and turns, its claws raking across the frozen ground as the ropes dig deeper into its fur. A second, larger white wolf stands just inches away, pacing in tight circles and snapping its jaws toward the mesh.
The air is thick with the sound of their yips and high-pitched vocalizations. The larger wolf stops pacing and lunges forward, its teeth catching on the net, trying to pull it free from the smaller animal. It keeps its head low, its eyes tracking every movement of the trapped cub.

A Moment Of Unexpected Connection
A pickup truck pulls to a stop on the snow-covered forest track. The driver, an older man with a white beard, steps out into the biting cold. He approaches the pair slowly, his boots crunching loudly on the packed ice. The wolves do not run; instead, they focus their attention on him as he drops to his knees in the drifts.
The man reaches out, his gloved fingers moving to the netting near the cub’s neck. He holds a pair of metal cutters firmly in his hand. The cub cowers, shifting its weight, while the larger wolf leans in close to the man’s face. It lets out a long, resonant howl, its nose brushing against the man’s jacket as he works.
He grips a thick section of rope and snaps it with the tool. The cub jerks slightly as the tension releases. The man works methodically, snipping through the thick, interlocking loops one by one. The larger wolf stands guard, its ears pricked forward, watching the blades work against the ropes. It occasionally nudges the man’s arm, its heavy breathing fogging the air around them.
The Final Release
The man reaches deep into the folds of the mesh, pulling a tangled strand away from the cub’s hind leg. He leans in, murmuring in a low, steady tone, his eyes fixed on the remaining knots. With a final snip, the last major connection to the trap falls away into the snow.
The cub stands up, shaking its coat, while the older wolf remains still beside the man. The man brushes the remaining bits of netting from the cub’s fur. He pauses, his hands resting for a brief moment on the animals, the tension in their bodies slowly draining away as they stand together in the clearing.
The man stands up and brushes the snow from his trousers. He turns and begins to walk back toward the waiting truck. The white wolves stand side by side on the frozen trail, watching his retreating figure before turning to trot off into the dense, snow-dusted pines together. The man stops and stands near the truck, watching them vanish into the shadows of the forest, his hands resting on his hips.
