A Roadside Discovery
The injured lynx pressed her side against the dry gravel, her eyes half-closed as two small cubs sat upright a few feet away.
Several cars sped past on the asphalt, their tires kicking up small pebbles near the quiet family.
A black SUV slowed down and pulled over onto the shoulder of the forest road, its engine humming before going silent.
A man in a brown plaid shirt and blue jeans stepped out of the driver’s side and walked toward the wild cats.
He knelt down on the pine needles, keeping his hands low and his movements predictable.
The two cubs scurried slightly backward, their large ears twitching as they watched the newcomer approach.
One of the cubs nuzzled her shoulder, letting out a quiet chirp while the other sat on its hind legs to get a better view.
The adult lynx did not move, her chest rising and falling with shallow, labored breaths.
The man spoke in a low, quiet murmur, keeping his tone even so he would not startle the wild animals.
He reached out a bare hand, gently placing his fingers on her spotted flank to assess her condition.
He observed a large, raw patch of missing fur and broken skin stretching across her lower back.
The mother cat remained still, offering no resistance as he inspected the area of the injury.
Healing in the Forest
The man reached into his pocket and pulled out a white canister of medical spray.
He shook the bottle twice, then pointed the nozzle directly at the exposed, pink skin on her back.
With a soft hiss, a thick layer of white antiseptic foam spread over the entire length of the wound.
The cubs stood tall on their front paws, sniffing the air as the scent of the medicine drifted toward them.
Next, the man retrieved a wide roll of white elastic bandage from his gear.
He carefully slid one end of the gauze beneath the mother’s abdomen, lifting her side slightly to loop it through.
He wrapped the material around her torso several times, ensuring the white foam was completely covered and secured.
The mother lynx kept her head rested on the gravel, her ears occasionally rotating toward the road but otherwise staying calm.
He tucked the loose end of the bandage under the wrapped layers, patting the side of her body to make sure it was firm.
A Fresh Start
Once the dressing was in place, the man reached for a clear plastic container filled with fresh, clean water.
He placed the square tub directly in front of the mother’s face, letting a little water slosh over the rim.
The scent of the water drew her attention immediately, and her nose twitched as she opened her eyes fully.
She slowly pushed herself up onto her front paws, elevating her bandaged chest off the dirt.
She lowered her muzzle into the container and began to lap up the water, her tongue moving in a steady rhythm.
The two cubs crept closer, their small paws stepping onto the white road line as they gathered around the bowl.
The mother finished drinking, her gaze shifting to the dense green trees lining the highway as her cubs licked the spilled droplets off the ground.
The man sat back on his heels, watching the three cats crowd around the container by the roadside.
