A Discovery In The Mud
The golden retriever sprinted through the tall marsh grass, barking wildly toward the river bank.
His owner, sitting nearby with a fishing rod, laid his gear in the grass and followed the dog’s frantic calls down to the water’s edge.

There, flat on its side in the wet mud, lay a white egret struggling against a heavy green fishing net.
The nylon mesh was wrapped tightly around its long, dark leg, cutting off circulation with every desperate kick.
The bird’s white feathers were matted with dark gray clay, and its eyes darted in panic as it thrashed against the mud.
The bird flapped its broad white wings, splashing muddy water into the air as the man approached.
He sank to his knees in the soft muck, extending his hands slowly to let the bird adjust to his presence.
His dog stood just behind him, ears perked and tail still, watching the rescue unfold.
A Gentle Touch
With steady fingers, the man began the slow process of untangling the tight green strings.
The egret stopped thrashing, its chest rising and falling rapidly as it stared at the man’s hands working near its sharp yellow beak.
He worked patiently, peeling back the synthetic fibers that had sliced deep into the bird’s scaly black skin.
One by one, the stubborn knots of the discarded net gave way under his careful grip.
When the last loop of nylon slid free, the man reached into his woven basket sitting on the bank.
He pulled out a clean roll of white bandage and wrapped it snugly around the bird’s bruised leg joint, securing the injured limb.
Next, he unscrewed his plastic water bottle and poured a thin stream of fresh water directly into the bird’s open beak.
The egret swallowed greedily, its long neck pulsing with each gulp as the cool liquid revived it.
He then offered a small, silver fish from his palm, which the bird snapped up and swallowed in one swift motion.
Gently carrying the recovering bird to a patch of tall, dry reeds, the man let it rest in the shade before returning to his fishing spot.
An Unexpected Threat
An hour passed, and the riverbank fell quiet as the man sat on his small folding chair, holding his fishing line.
He had kicked off his shoes, his bare feet resting on the cool grass near the water.
From the thick brush behind his chair, a long, dark shape slithered silently across the green blades.
It was a large cobra, its patterned scales glistening in the sunlight as it crawled toward the man’s exposed feet.
Its head swayed slowly from side to side, tracking the warmth of the unsuspecting fisherman.
The man glanced down, his eyes widening as he spotted the deadly reptile just inches from his toes.
He let out a sharp cry, kicking his legs out and tumbling backward off his chair into the slick mud.
The cobra reared back, expanding its wide hood and exposing its fangs, ready to strike the fallen fisherman.
He scrambled backward on his elbows, his green shirt immediately soaking up the wet clay as the snake advanced.
The Ultimate Return
Before the cobra could strike, a white blur dropped from the sky like a stone.
The egret landed directly in front of the man, its large wings spread wide to block the snake’s path.
With a lightning-fast jab of its neck, the bird clamped its powerful yellow beak around the cobra’s neck.
The snake thrashed wildly, wrapping its heavy body around the bird’s legs, but the egret held firm.
Flapping its wings hard against the mud, the bird lifted off the ground, carrying the writhing serpent high into the air.
It flew out over the deep channel of the river and released its grip, dropping the cobra safely into the rushing water below.
The egret circled back to the shore, landing softly on the mud right next to the shaken fisherman.
The man sat up, pulling his knees to his chest, and gently wrapped his arms around the bird’s soft, white body.
The dog jogged over, wagging his tail slowly, as the man pressed his cheek against the bird’s neck while the river flowed quietly behind them
