A Colossal Rescue Operation Begins
A gloved hand clipped a heavy metal carabiner onto a thick climbing rope hanging from the open cabin door of a helicopter.
Below, a massive humpback whale lay stranded on the wet sand, its dark tail flukes washing in the shallow surf as the tide pulled away.
Two crew members slipped out of the chopper’s doorway and slid down the ropes, their boots landing heavily on the damp, packed shoreline.
The wind from the helicopter rotors whipped up a wall of sand and ocean spray, stinging the faces of the ground crew as they ran toward the scene.

Another rescuer grabbed the opposite end of the strap, pulling it tight against the slippery, dark skin of the whale’s flank to keep it secure.

At the rear of the whale, workers wrapped more straps near the tail section, checking the alignment to ensure the heavy load would be perfectly balanced.
