The Red Numbers Ticking Down
Red numbers flashed on a digital screen attached to a black backpack sitting on the hallway floor.
The display blinked from fourteen to thirteen seconds. A thick bundle of wires ran from the timer into the zippered pouch, connecting to two red cylinders taped to the sides of the frame.
An officer in a helmet and heavy body armor thrust his arms outward, guiding a crowd of teenagers toward the exit doors. He pointed down the hallway, gesturing for everyone to keep moving while students clutched their books and ran.
A second officer stood near the doorway, waving his arm in a rapid circular motion to maintain the flow of the evacuation. The students pushed through the exit doors, spilling onto the bright green grass of the campus outside.
The lead officer kept his visor down, his eyes scanning the hallway to ensure no one was left behind. He waved his arm toward the open door as the last group of teenagers hurried past him.

A Golden Retriever Runs In
A golden retriever wearing a red utility harness marked with ‘POLICE K-9’ trotted briskly down the opposite corridor. The long hallway was bathed in a crimson emergency glow, casting long shadows against the rows of grey metal lockers.
The dog clamped its jaws firmly around the top handle of the black backpack. With a steady lift, the retriever raised the bag off the linoleum floor and turned back toward the exit.
Its tail wagged in wide arcs as it carried the heavy weight. The dog did not falter, keeping its head high to prevent the backpack from dragging along the floor tiles.
Two officers dressed in green tactical gear held a yellow strip of police tape across the open doorway. As the dog approached, they lifted the tape high above their heads to clear its path.
The retriever sprinted underneath the tape, the heavy backpack swaying beneath its chin. The dog’s paws clicked rapidly against the concrete as it transitioned from the indoor hallway to the outdoor pavement.
The Race to the Outside Ditch
The dog accelerated across the parking lot and onto the school’s athletic field. Its ears flopped back in the wind as it kept a tight hold on the canvas strap of the bag.
The red display on the backpack flashed down to five seconds, then four. The dog ran with a steady, powerful gait, its eyes fixed on the open field ahead.
The retriever reached a concrete drainage structure built into the grass. Without slowing down, the dog lowered its head and dropped the backpack directly into the deep opening.
The heavy bag slid down the concrete slope and out of sight. The dog turned immediately and sprinted back toward the safety of the main building, leaving the ticking device behind.
Searching the Smoke
A massive orange fireball burst upward from the concrete ditch. A column of thick, black smoke coiled into the blue sky, carrying dirt and shattered debris high into the air.
The force of the blast scattered loose grass and dirt across the field. Several police officers moved through the dissipating smoke, scanning the open ground for any sign of the retriever.
An officer in a black uniform swept a flashlight beam across the hazy grass. A police helicopter circled overhead, its blades cutting through the rising smoke while another officer called out for the dog.
The smoke began to drift away, revealing the scorched ground around the drainage ditch. The officers continued their search, their faces tense as they called the dog’s name into the clearing.
They found the golden retriever lying flat on the grass, its tail starting to thump against the ground as it spotted its handler. The handler dropped to both knees, opening his arms wide.
The golden retriever leaped up, placing its front paws on the officer’s shoulders. The officer wrapped both arms around the dog’s neck, burying his face in its thick coat while firefighters and students gathered around them to clap and cheer.
