A Collision on the Mountain Road
The dark SUV’s front bumper catches the edge of the large tortoise’s shell, sending the animal flipping onto its back in the middle of the empty road. The vehicle does not stop, continuing its climb around the winding, tree-lined mountain bend.
The tortoise lies exposed on the asphalt, its underside showing a raw, red wound. Nearby, two smaller tortoises crawl cautiously toward their fallen companion, their heads bobbing slightly as they navigate the textured road surface.
A Sudden Turn of Events
A white vehicle appears in the distance and slows down as it approaches the scene. It pulls over to the shoulder, and a woman in a dark t-shirt and jeans hops out, leaving the driver-side door hanging open.
She moves quickly toward the group of tortoises. She drops to her knees on the road, her eyes fixed on the center of the large tortoise’s shell where the injury is visible.
The Process of Care
The woman reaches into a white plastic bottle, pouring a clear liquid directly onto the center of the wound. She holds a folded white cloth in her other hand, pressing it gently against the area to soak up the excess fluid and clear away the debris.
She discards the first piece of cloth, grabbing a fresh one from her supply. She reaches for a bottle with an amber-colored liquid and applies a precise amount directly into the open center of the injury.
Once the area is treated, she places a clean, folded white square over the spot. She uses a strip of blue adhesive tape, wrapping it firmly around the creature’s massive shell to hold the dressing in place.
She slides her hands under the sides of the heavy tortoise and lifts. The weight of the shell is evident as she carries the creature toward the edge of the grass.
The Journey Back to the Water
She walks toward the bank of a mountain lake, with the smaller tortoises trailing behind her. She lowers the large tortoise onto the grassy slope, placing it near the water’s edge.
The large tortoise stretches its neck forward, extending its limbs as it feels the mud beneath it. The smaller tortoises reach the shoreline as well, clustering around the larger one.
The woman stands back, watching as they move as a group toward the ripple of the lake. The large tortoise inches closer to the water, its head level with the surface as it prepares to enter the cool, still pool.
The smaller ones follow right beside it, keeping close to the larger shell. The group continues their movement until they are partially submerged at the edge of the lake, blending into the landscape as the camera pans back to reveal the mountain range reflected in the water
