A Sudden Stop On The Highway
A silver sedan sped down the two-lane asphalt road, passing right by a brown-and-white calf sitting motionless in the gravel shoulder.
The young animal remained slumped against the dirt verge as a second car approached from the opposite direction.
A black SUV slowed to a halt several yards down the road, and the driver opened his door to step out into the sunlight.
The man walked briskly back toward the calf, crouching low beside its trembling body on the edge of the pavement.
He reached his hands out slowly, placing one palm against the calf’s side while extending his other hand toward its hind leg.
Finding The Source Of Pain
The calf lifted its head, turning its eyes toward the man as his fingers probed around the lower hoof.
As his fingers tightened on a dark object embedded near the hoof, the calf pulled back its head and opened its mouth wide, letting out a sharp bellow.
The man kept his hand steady, pulling firmly until a piece of sharp debris came free from the soft tissue of the foot.
He held the removed object up briefly to examine it before tossing it into the grass far away from the roadside.
The calf lowered its head to the ground, its body relaxing as the immediate pressure left its leg.
The man gently rested his hand on the calf’s neck, stroking the short brown fur in slow, rhythmic motions.
Treatment And Care On The Roadside
The man reached into his coat and produced a yellow spray canister of antiseptic medication.
He angled the nozzle directly toward the small wound on the calf’s raised hoof and pressed down firmly.
A fine white mist coated the injury, completely covering the puncture site to protect it from dirt and bacteria.
The calf shifted slightly, resting its weight back on the ground while the man fetched a roll of white medical bandage.
He lifted the injured leg once more, wrapping the white cloth tightly around the hoof and ankle.
With precise movements, he wound the bandage around the leg multiple times until the wound was completely secured.
He tucked the end of the wrap neatly beneath the top layer and patted the calf’s shoulder reassuringly.
A Refreshing Moment Of Peace
The man stood up briefly to retrieve a wide white plastic bowl from his vehicle and filled it with liquid.
He set the filled dish directly on the gravel in front of the calf’s snout.
The young animal leaned its nose forward into the bowl and began lapping continuously at the fresh water.
As the calf drank, the man knelt beside it on the gravel, resting his hand gently between the animal’s ears and softly stroking its forehead.
