A Difficult Curb on a Quiet Street
The blue wheelchair’s small front wheels thudded hard against the concrete curb, stopping all forward momentum.
The white-haired man in the light blue polo shirt gripped the black rubber wheels with both hands, throwing his weight forward to force the chair up the ledge.
A few feet away on the sidewalk, an Australian Shepherd held a thick braided rope in his jaws, his paws dug firmly into the grass.
The dog pulled backward, his body leaning close to the ground, trying to assist his owner.
With a deep breath, the man heaved himself forward again, but the chair refused to budge over the vertical concrete barrier.
The wheels spun in place, slipping on the asphalt before settling back into the gutter.
The man let out a heavy sigh, his shoulders slumping as he let go of the wheels.
He covered his face with his hands, his head bowing toward his chest in quiet frustration.
An Unexpected Departure
Seeing his owner’s head drop, the black-and-white dog let go of the rope and stepped down from the sidewalk.
He pressed his wet nose against the man’s hands, nudging them away from his face.
The man looked up, his expression softening as the dog climbed onto his lap, offering gentle licks to his cheek.
The man raised a hand to stroke the dog’s head, but the moment of comfort was brief.
The dog suddenly turned, jumped back down to the asphalt, and trotted away down the street, leaving the man sitting alone by the curb.
The man watched him go, resting his hands on his lap, unsure of where his companion was heading.
Down the block, a chain-link fence bordered an active construction site where heavy machinery sat idling.
Two workers wearing orange safety vests and white hardhats stood near a large stack of freshly cut lumber, their backs turned to the street.
The dog slipped past the open gate, his eyes locked on a pile of loose wooden boards lying on the ground.
Searching for the Right Tool
The dog bypassed the workers entirely, zeroing in on a long, sturdy wooden plank resting near the edge of the site.
He lowered his head, gripped the center of the heavy board firmly in his mouth, and lifted it off the dirt.
The weight of the wood forced him to keep his head high as he balanced the long plank.
With the board held securely in his jaws, the dog turned and trotted back out of the construction gate, heading straight toward the stranded wheelchair.
The man watched the approaching dog, his eyes widening as he realized what his pet was carrying.
A broad smile broke across the man’s face, his posture instantly straightening in the seat.
The dog arrived back at the curb and carefully lowered the wooden plank onto the ground.
Using his nose and paws, the dog nudged the end of the board forward until it slid directly beneath the wheelchair’s front tire, creating a smooth, angled ramp over the high curb.
Overcoming the Obstacle Together
The dog immediately picked up the braided rope again, stepping back onto the sidewalk grass to prepare for another pull.
The man gripped the wheelchair’s outer rims, his hands positioned to push with renewed energy.
With a coordinated effort, the man pushed forward as the dog leaned back, pulling the rope taut.
This time, instead of striking the concrete wall, the front wheel rolled smoothly up the wooden board.
The chair tilted backward slightly as it ascended the makeshift ramp, rising higher with every inch.
The man laughed aloud, his chest shaking with joy as the rear wheels caught the edge of the plank and rolled up onto the grass.
Once both wheels were safely situated on the flat, grassy lawn, the dog dropped the rope from his mouth.
He lunged forward, placing his front paws on the man’s lap and eagerly licking the man’s face while the man wrapped his arms around the dog’s furry neck, laughing and holding him close on the sidewalk.
