Mike Johnson Warns of Potential Trump Investigations if Democrats Win House Majority

House Speaker Mike Johnson is warning Republican audiences about the possibility of extensive congressional investigations if Democrats gain control of the House in the November 2026 midterm elections.

Johnson has pointed to statements from Democratic lawmakers who have discussed using congressional oversight powers to investigate President Donald Trump, members of his administration and his family.

Johnson’s Warning to Republican Supporters

At a Faith and Freedom Coalition conference, Johnson said that impeachment would not necessarily be his main concern if Republicans lost control of the House.

He argued that Democrats would instead use House committees to investigate the president, his Cabinet, family members, donors and political allies.

Johnson has made similar comments elsewhere, saying Democrats could pursue impeachment and extensive investigations if they gain the House majority.

These statements reflect Johnson’s characterization of what a Democratic-controlled House might do; they are not a prediction of what the next Congress will ultimately decide.

Democrats Have Discussed an Oversight Agenda

Democratic lawmakers have indeed publicly discussed plans for increased congressional oversight if they win control of the House.

Rep. Robert Garcia, the current ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has outlined investigations involving Trump’s business interests, administration officials and members of the president’s family. The Washington Post reported that Democratic lawmakers were preparing a broad investigative agenda ahead of the midterms.

Garcia has also already pursued investigations while serving as the committee’s ranking member, including inquiries involving federal contracts connected to members of the Trump family.

What Could Happen With Impeachment?

Impeachment would require action by the House of Representatives. The Constitution gives the House the power to impeach federal officials, while the Senate conducts impeachment trials.

Although some Democratic lawmakers have discussed impeachment as a possible tool, the scope and timing of any such action would depend on the composition of the next House, decisions by congressional committees and the evidence developed through investigations.

The Washington Post reported that Democratic lawmakers were preparing numerous investigations, while also noting that some Democrats have cautioned against making promises about what those investigations would ultimately accomplish.

The Midterm Elections Will Determine Control of the House

The November 2026 elections will determine which party controls the House for the remainder of Trump’s term.

At present, Republicans control the chamber, while Democrats hold the minority. If control changes, the majority party would have greater authority over committee leadership, hearings and subpoenas.

That makes congressional control one of the central institutional questions surrounding the upcoming midterm elections.

For now, Johnson’s comments and Democratic lawmakers’ stated plans show two competing expectations about what could happen if the House changes hands: Republicans are warning about investigations and possible impeachment, while Democrats are publicly discussing expanded oversight of the administration and Trump’s business and family interests.
