Every gust of wind from passing traffic ruffled the mother bird\u2019s feathers. She stretched her long neck over the ledge, looking for a way across the multi-lane road, but the wall was too high for her young to follow.

She dropped back down onto the pavement, tucking her cygnets beneath the curve of her body. Across the rumble strip, tires screeched and engines roared as vehicles continued their high-speed commute mere feet away from the vulnerable family.<\/p>\n
A pickup truck pulled off onto the shoulder several yards away. A man wearing a baseball cap, dark t-shirt, and shorts stepped out and closed his door quietly.<\/p>\n
He walked along the asphalt toward the barrier, keeping his pace slow and his footsteps light. As he neared the birds, he dropped down into a low crouch, placing his sneakers flat against the pavement.<\/p>\n
The adult swan instantly snapped her head in his direction. She flared both of her wide white wings outward to their full span, lowered her neck, and let out a sharp, rasping hiss to shield the babies pressed between her feet.<\/p>\n
The man raised both palms and held them open in the air, instantly leaning backward to give the bird space. He stayed low to the ground, keeping his voice quiet and avoiding any sudden reaches toward the young birds.<\/p>\n
Instead of trying to grab the large bird, the man stood up slowly and extended his arms wide like a soft guide rail. He took small, shuffling steps behind them, creating a gentle barrier between the swan family and the active traffic lanes.<\/p>\n
The mother swan lowered her defensive wings by a few inches, turning her head to assess the open shoulder ahead. She took a tentative step forward on the asphalt, and her two fuzzy cygnets immediately scurried right behind her tail feathers.<\/p>\n
Step by step, the man maintained an even distance of three feet, using outstretched hands to steer the birds away from the highway barrier. The mother swan continued marching forward along the road verge, constantly checking over her shoulder to make sure both cygnets kept pace.<\/p>\n
The man guided them down the roadside slope, steering the small group toward an opening in the trees where a sign marked lake access.<\/p>\n
The paved asphalt gave way to packed dirt and patches of green marsh grass near the water. The adult swan quickened her waddling stride as the clear surface of the lake came into full view.<\/p>\n
She stepped into the shallow water, her black webbed feet disturbing the sandy bottom and sending ripples through the lily pads. The two grey cygnets pushed past the shoreline weeds directly behind her, their buoyant downy bodies immediately floating on top of the gentle waves.<\/p>\n
The man stepped up to the edge of the waterline and stood still with his hands planted on his hips, wet sneakers resting on the damp gravel. The mother swan turned slightly to face the open lake, dipping her orange beak into the clear water as her two young paddled beside her into the open bay.<\/p>\n
