Trapped in the Wet Netting<\/h3>\n

The heron\u2019s broad slate-blue wing beat against the shallow water, splashing gray mud across its flank as it fought the mesh pinned underneath.<\/p>\n

Its long, sharp yellow beak snapped wide open, releasing harsh, guttural croaks into the gray sky.<\/p>\n

A few yards away across the flooded field, two other tall herons stood upright in the stillness, their heads turned toward the commotion.<\/p>\n

Heavy rubber boots squelched into the muck along the field edge.<\/p>\n

Careful Hands in Cold Water<\/h3>\n

The bird watched the boots approach, stretching its neck straight and opening its beak in warning.<\/p>\n

Instead of pulling back, the man leaned his weight forward over the mud.<\/p>\n

He lowered his gloved hands smoothly onto the bird\u2019s back, pressing down with just enough firm pressure to secure the thrashing feathers.<\/p>\n

His left hand stabilized the large body while his right hand worked beneath the water\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n

He pinched the tangled monofilament strands, pulling them away from the pinned wing joint loop by loop.<\/p>\n

The bird let out a sharp hiss, shifting its weight from one spindly leg to the other in the mud.<\/p>\n

The man kept his torso low, murmuring quietly while working his fingers through the snagged cords.<\/p>\n

Working Free of the Mesh<\/h3>\n

With a steady upward pull, the man lifted the tangled netting clear off the bird\u2019s primary feathers.<\/p>\n

He pulled the heavy mesh backward toward the grassy bank, peeling it completely out of the strike zone.<\/p>\n

The heron stumbled slightly on the soft mud as the resistance vanished, catching its balance on long, spindly legs.<\/p>\n

It stood completely still for three seconds, its slender neck extending to full height as water dripped from its tail feathers.<\/p>\n

The bird ruffled its gray-blue back, aligning its plumage before crouching low against the water.<\/p>\n

Taking to the Open Sky<\/h3>\n

Its powerful wings opened wide, each primary feather spreading against the air as it kicked upward out of the shallows.<\/p>\n

The heavy downstroke sent concentric ripples across the muddy surface.<\/p>\n

The heron gained altitude in two smooth wingbeats, soaring low across the flooded field.<\/p>\n

It banked gently to the right and touched down smoothly on the shallow flat right beside the other two herons, folding its gray wings tight against its side.<\/p>\n
