\u2014 This is Luna, \u2014 she said. \u2014 It\u2019s a beautiful name, my husband chose it. But at night she\u2019s not Luna \u2014 she\u2019s an alarm clock with claws.<\/p>\n

Two big eyes looked at me from inside the carrier. A large gray cat with thick fur and a calm gaze. No aggression at all.<\/p>\n

\u2014 What\u2019s happening? \u2014 I asked.<\/p>\n

Anna took a deep breath.<\/p>\n

\u2014 She wakes me up every night. Always around three or four in the morning. First she gently taps my cheek with her paw. If I don\u2019t react, she starts hitting harder. She may even bite my hand. She pulls the blanket off me. Until I get up and go sleep on the couch in the living room, she won\u2019t calm down. And as soon as I leave \u2014 she lies down on my pillow and sleeps until morning.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Has anyone ever told you that you snore?<\/p>\n

She looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n

\u2014 A neighbor once said that at night it sounds like I stop breathing and then suddenly gasp for air.<\/p>\n

I looked at the cat. She didn\u2019t take her eyes off Anna.<\/p>\n

\u2014 It seems Luna wakes you not because she\u2019s mean, \u2014 I said. \u2014 She might be reacting to what\u2019s happening to you while you sleep. Animals can sense when breathing changes or when the heartbeat becomes strange. For her, it\u2019s a warning signal.<\/p>\n

Anna looked at me as if I had said something strange.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Are you saying she\u2019s saving me?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2014 I can\u2019t prove it, \u2014 I replied. \u2014 But I\u2019m sure the problem isn\u2019t the cat. You need to get tested. Blood work, sugar levels, check your heart, maybe even your breathing during sleep. Start with that.<\/p>\n

She stayed silent for a long time and then nodded.<\/p>\n

A week later Anna called again. That heavy exhaustion was no longer in her voice.<\/p>\n

\u2014 I did the tests, \u2014 she said. \u2014 My blood sugar is high. And the doctor sent me to a cardiologist. They found problems with my heart. They said that sometimes my breathing stops at night. I was sent for further examinations. The doctor said it\u2019s serious.<\/p>\n

She paused and then quietly added:<\/p>\n

\u2014 If Luna hadn\u2019t woken me up\u2026 I would have kept blaming everything on my nerves.<\/p>\n
