A grey car rolls slowly down the asphalt, passing just inches from the trapped bird. The mother duck dips her head, then pulls back sharply against the restriction of the netting.

The ducklings stay close, peeping softly as the mother bird tries to stand. Every movement she makes only tightens the dark fibers around her webbed feet.<\/p>\n
A man in a brown polo shirt walks toward the scene from the road. He stops, his brow furrowing as he looks down at the tangled bird.<\/p>\n
He bends his knees, crouching low until he is eye-level with the duck. He reaches out, his fingers fumbling with the heavy mesh while the ducklings huddle even closer to their mother.<\/p>\n
The man pulls the netting away from the duck\u2019s wing, creating space for her to move. He takes a pair of scissors from his pocket and begins to snip at the thick black cords.<\/p>\n
He grips the mesh with one hand, his knuckles white against the dark material. With the other hand, he directs the blades of the scissors into the tight knots wrapped around the duck\u2019s legs.<\/p>\n
The mother duck stops fighting, her neck held straight as the man works. The steel blades click as they bite through the last of the restraining fibers.<\/p>\n
He pulls a long strip of netting away, tossing it aside on the grass. The mother duck shifts her body, testing the freedom of her legs as the ducklings scatter in tiny circles around her.<\/p>\n
The man reaches for a plastic bottle and unscrews the cap. He tips it, letting a thin stream of water pour over the top of the duck\u2019s head, watching as she shakes the moisture from her feathers.<\/p>\n
He sets the bottle down and reaches into a bag. He pulls out a handful of grain and scatters it onto the pavement in front of the family.<\/p>\n
The mother duck lowers her bill, snapping at the food. The ducklings crowd into the space between her feet, their heads bobbing as they peck at the scattered grains on the road.<\/p>\n
