Samantha Fox became one of the most recognizable stars of the 1980s, but many fans may not know that her life included an unexpected chapter on the football pitch. Before and during her rise to fame as a model and singer, Fox developed a passion for sports—and even played as a winger for Arsenal Ladies.

Her story is especially remarkable because her sporting ambitions followed a difficult start in childhood.

Fox revealed that she was diagnosed with Perthes’ disease as a child, a condition that affects the hip joint. She had to wear callipers on her legs for two years, and the condition meant she never got to enjoy her first bicycle as she had hoped.

Once the callipers came off, however, she threw herself into physical activities. She swam for her school, won gymnastics awards, and discovered a love of sport that would eventually lead her to football.

In an interview with ITV’s Good Morning Britain in 2022, Fox spoke about her experience playing for Arsenal Ladies. She recalled wearing the number seven shirt and compared her playing style to David Beckham’s.

“I was a great player,” she said, explaining that her small stature forced her to find creative ways to get past bigger opponents.

Fox remembered learning to use nutmegs—playing the ball through an opponent’s legs—and then running around them. Her account offered fans a surprising glimpse of a competitive side of her life that was very different from her career in entertainment.

Football can be a physically demanding sport, particularly when a smaller player faces much taller or stronger opponents. Fox explained that she learned to rely on agility and technique to get around defenders.

Her recollections suggest that she enjoyed the challenge and developed her own approach to the game. Although she eventually moved away from football, the experience remained a memorable part of her life story.

Fox became famous in the early 1980s as a model before establishing a successful music career. Her hit songs, including “Touch Me (I Want Your Body),” helped make her an international pop name.

Her career included television appearances, live performances, and music releases that kept her in the public eye for decades. Yet her football background reveals another side of a star often associated primarily with music and modeling.

Fox has continued to speak openly about her sporting past and her support for Arsenal. Her story connects two very different worlds: the competitive environment of football and the fast-moving entertainment industry.

For fans who know her mainly from her 1980s hits, discovering that she once played as a winger for Arsenal Ladies adds an unexpected dimension to her biography.

Her journey is a reminder that public figures often have interests and experiences that remain hidden behind their best-known achievements. In Fox’s case, the pop star also had a footballer’s spirit—and a memorable story to tell about it.

Why Being Small Became an Advantage
