Her performance in The Last Showgirl became a major turning point, earning her recognition during the 2025 awards season. Directed by Gia Coppola, The Last Showgirl follows Shelly, a veteran Las Vegas showgirl whose long-running production comes to an end. As she faces an uncertain future, Shelly must reconsider her identity, her career, and her relationship with her daughter.

The production was completed in only 18 days, primarily at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas. Filmed on 16mm, the movie embraced a more intimate, textured look rather than the polished style associated with traditional Hollywood productions.

Despite its limited budget, the project attracted significant attention for its performances and Anderson’s transformation into a complex dramatic character. Read more about the production.

Anderson’s performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. The recognition marked a significant milestone in her acting career.

In interviews, she described the opportunity as deeply meaningful, explaining that she was able to bring her own experiences with beauty, fame, and aging into the character of Shelly.

Rather than treating the role as simply another acting job, Anderson approached it as a chance to show audiences a different side of herself.

Another notable aspect of the film was Anderson’s decision to wear little or no makeup in many of Shelly’s everyday scenes.

This choice reflected her broader approach to beauty, which she had increasingly embraced in public appearances since 2023. Anderson explained that she wanted the character to feel authentic, focusing on Shelly’s emotions and experiences rather than her appearance.

Her decision also connected with a wider conversation about aging, confidence, and the pressure placed on women in the entertainment industry.

The production also incorporated authentic showgirl costumes associated with Las Vegas entertainment history. Costumes from Caesars Entertainment’s Jubilee! production helped bring a sense of realism to the film’s backstage world. Learn more about the film’s Las Vegas setting.

These details helped ground the story in the lives of performers whose careers are shaped by demanding schedules, public expectations, and the uncertainty of what comes next.

For Anderson, The Last Showgirl represented more than an awards-season success.
