When Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes welcomed their daughter, Suri Cruise, in 2006, she instantly became one of the most talked-about celebrity children in the world.

Nearly two decades later, the spotlight hasn’t completely faded.

First official portrait

Now 18 years old and beginning her college journey, Suri is once again making headlines as fans marvel at her dramatic transformation from a chubby-cheeked little girl into a confident young woman.

And while many are impressed by how much she has grown up, one debate continues to dominate social media whenever new photos emerge: does she look more like her mother or her father?

Suri was born in Santa Monica, California, and spent much of her early childhood in front of cameras as paparazzi documented outings with her famous parents. Her first official portrait, featured on the cover of Vanity Fair, became a worldwide sensation when she was just six months old.

When introducing their daughter to the world, Tom Cruise revealed that he and Katie Holmes had chosen the name Suri long before her birth. According to Cruise, the couple felt convinced they were expecting a girl and settled on the name early in the pregnancy. The name held special significance for them, carrying two beautiful meanings: “princess” in Hebrew and “red rose” in Persian.

Like many celebrity children of her generation, including Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, Suri Cruise spent much of her childhood in the public eye.

Surrounded by red carpets, movie sets, and constant media attention, she seemed remarkably comfortable in front of the camera from an early age. By the time she was three, her confidence and natural charm had already made her one of the world’s most photographed and talked-about celebrity kids.

As Suri grew older, fans watched her evolve from a shy toddler clutching teddy bears into a stylish teenager navigating life in New York City alongside her mother. Over the years, many observers noted her striking resemblance to Katie Holmes, particularly her eyes, facial features, and effortless sense of style.

But as Suri entered her late teens, more people began noticing similarities to Tom Cruise as well.

One commenter wrote, ”That is the female version of Tom Cruise…Wow no denying that she is his kid. Shes [sic] a pretty young lady.”

Another added, ”Sorry everyone but Suri looks just like her dad! Look at her NOSE, & eyes…it’s unmistakably Tom. (IJS)”

The public fascination with Suri extends beyond her appearance.

Since Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes announced their separation in 2012, Suri’s relationship with her father has been the subject of ongoing speculation.

Reports have long suggested that the two have been estranged for years, with various explanations offered for the distance between them. According to the source material, Tom acknowledged that family dynamics would change after the divorce, while former Scientology members and insiders have offered differing views on why the relationship reportedly deteriorated.

Despite the public attention surrounding her family, Suri has largely focused on building her own life. These days, Suri is known as Suri Noelle, a name that reflects both her close bond with her mother and her desire to step into adulthood on her own terms. As she embarks on university life, she seems focused on building a path separate from her famous family legacy.

Like both of her parents, she has shown artistic talent from a young age.

Katie Holmes previously revealed that Suri contributed vocals to the films Alone Together and Rare Objects, praising her daughter’s abilities and describing her as ”very, very talented.” Suri has also explored acting, including a role as Morticia in a school production of The Addams Family.

In 2024, Suri celebrated several major milestones.

After turning 18, she attended her senior prom in New York, turning heads in a maroon-and-white dress before graduating and preparing for college.

Soon afterward, she began her freshman year at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where she reportedly chose to live in a dorm and experience campus life like any other student.

A source said, ”Suri wants the full college experience, so she is giving the dorm rooms a try and will have a roommate.”

As she settles into college life, Suri is getting a taste of a much more typical student experience. According to the Daily Mail, she is believed to be living in either Donner House or Scobell House, where dorm rooms come equipped with the essentials, including a bed, desk, and storage space. While some residence halls offer air conditioning, others do not.

Beyond the dorms, Carnegie Mellon provides students with plenty of dining choices. From coffee and pastries to pasta, bagels, pizza, and food trucks, there are numerous options available across campus. Students can also order meals through Grubhub for added convenience.

When it comes to health and wellness, Suri has access to the university’s Highmark Center for Health, Wellness, and Athletics. The facility offers medical care, counseling services, fitness equipment, and recreational spaces designed to support both students’ physical and mental well-being throughout their college years.

Suri Cruise today

Today, that dark-haired, green-eyed little girl who once captivated the world with her porcelain complexion and striking gaze has just celebrated her 20th birthday — a milestone that highlights just how dramatically her life has changed over the years.

For Katie Holmes, watching her daughter reach adulthood has been emotional.

”Every day, kids get a little further away from you,” Katie said. ”That’s a positive thing. They should be becoming more independent, but it’s heartbreaking. You want them to stay with you forever, but they’re amazing beings, and you have to do everything you can to give them what they need — and then they’re going to go. And that’s going to be very, very hard for me.”

As Suri begins this exciting new chapter, one thing remains certain: the little girl the world once watched grow up is now an adult forging her own path. Yet every new photo seems to spark the same conversation among fans.

Whether people see more of Katie Holmes or more of Tom Cruise when they look at Suri, most agree on one thing — she has grown into a poised, talented young woman who carries a little bit of both of her famous parents with her.
