{"id":2559,"date":"2026-09-24T15:37:59","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T15:37:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/starloop.site\/?p=2559"},"modified":"2026-09-24T15:37:59","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T15:37:59","slug":"83-year-old-christian-grandmother-died-through-maid-after-family-says-she-repeatedly-changed-her-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starloop.site\/?p=2559","title":{"rendered":"83-Year-Old Christian Grandmother Died Through MAiD After Family Says She Repeatedly Changed Her Mind"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"show-inline-featured-image wp-caption alignnone\">\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-msnfeed-thumbnail size-msnfeed-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/09\/22102923\/BrigitteKranendonk-.jpg?resize=1200%2C675&amp;ssl=1\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/09\/22102923\/BrigitteKranendonk-.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/09\/22102923\/BrigitteKranendonk--768x432.jpg 768w\" alt=\"Brigitte Kranendonk\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Brigitte Stegemann, an 83-year-old Christian woman, died during a medically assisted death procedure in Canada after her granddaughter says she had previously told the family she did not want MAiD \u2013 and later became distressed after learning she was scheduled to undergo the procedure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brigitte Stegemann, a German-born Christian known to her family as \u201cGG\u201d or \u201cOma,\u201d died at The Pearl care home in Cannifton on July 10.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-center code-block-2\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her granddaughter, Brigitte Kranendonk, had cared for Stegemann for 12 years and served as her medical power of attorney for six. Kranendonk now alleges that her grandmother never clearly consented to the procedure on the morning of her death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The care home and medical practitioners involved have not made public statements about the allegations, but they have maintained that Stegemann legally consented to MAiD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kranendonk has since contacted Ontario\u2019s Chief Coroner\u2019s Office, the Patient Ombudsman and Belleville Police. Police have confirmed that the circumstances surrounding Stegemann\u2019s death are still being investigated.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-default code-block-3\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis incident is currently open and under investigation with our Criminal Investigations Division. We are unable to provide any additional information at this time,\u201d a spokesman said, according to VT.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-her-family-says-she-had-previously-rejected-maid\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Her family says she had previously rejected MAiD<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stegemann was moved into The Pearl roughly a year and a half before her death as her physical and cognitive health deteriorated. In February, she was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. Doctors were uncertain about her prognosis, estimating that she could have around six months to live or potentially as long as two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Kranendonk, the family had discussed different end-of-life options with Stegemann, including medical assistance in dying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Kranendonk says her grandmother had been clear about her wishes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, I don\u2019t want that,\u201d Stegemann reportedly told her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her Christian faith was also an important part of her opposition to assisted dying, according to her granddaughter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That changed while Kranendonk and her husband were away on a 10-day road trip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On July 3, Kranendonk got a call informing her that the care home planned to arrange a MAiD assessment because Stegemann\u2019s condition had worsened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one called me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-granddaughter-questioned-the-assessment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Granddaughter questioned the assessment<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kranendonk attended Stegemann\u2019s second assessment and said she became concerned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe explains MAiD to my grandmother by saying: \u2019We\u2019re going to give you medicine, you\u2019re going to feel at peace. And I just want you to know that you won\u2019t have a bowel movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kranendonk said English was not her grandmother\u2019s first language and that she was hearing-impaired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy Oma\u2019s just kind of nodding,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also questioned the results of the cognitive assessment used to determine whether Stegemann was capable of consenting to MAiD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the assessment, Kranendonk says her grandmother claimed she had no siblings, despite having 13. She also reportedly said they were all dead, although Kranendonk says two were still living.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was astonished that she was given the okay,\u201d Kranendonk said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The doctor ultimately told Kranendonk that Stegemann had been \u201cdeemed fit for MAiD, and we\u2019re going to proceed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The procedure was scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-brigitte-stegemann-assisted-death\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brigitte Stegemann assisted death<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day before, staff reportedly considered moving the appointment to Thursday because the doctor had an opening. Kranendonk objected, saying Stegemann\u2019s pastor and son would not be able to arrive in time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She then sat down with her grandmother to explain exactly what was going to happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI used very frank terms. I said, \u2018Do you know that you\u2019re going to die on Friday?\u2019\u201d she told the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Kranendonk, her grandmother became extremely upset and cried for roughly 45 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, Stegemann allegedly told her granddaughter: \u201cI\u2019ve made a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe was bawling. Inconsolable,\u201d Kranendonk said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI just kept saying there\u2019s no mistake, there\u2019s no mistake. You don\u2019t have to do this,\u201d she recalled. \u201cThe doctors are coming on Friday, and you just say no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, however, Kranendonk stopped focusing on the MAiD decision because she did not want to \u201ckeep fighting MAiD, and lose sight of who I\u2019m fighting for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, she says she chose to spend time with her grandmother and trusted the care home staff to handle the situation appropriately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy Oma wasn\u2019t the only vulnerable one in that situation \u2013 I was. I was vulnerable in the loss and love of my grandmother, being her care provider, and I was vulnerable in trusting that they were making the right decisions,\u201d she said. \u201cIt all felt so sped up and in slow motion at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-morning-of-her-death\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The morning of her death<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, July 10, Stegemann\u2019s family spent time with her in the care home garden. They ate strawberry ice cream and prayed with her pastor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kranendonk says they had been outside for around 10 minutes when, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the MAiD nurse asked everyone to return inside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This surprised the family because they had been told the doctor would not arrive until 11 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kranendonk alleges that the nurse struggled to insert the IV and pierced her grandmother several times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere was a phenomenal amount of blood,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is all over my Oma\u2019s arm, it is all over her nightie, soaking through her pillow, all over the sheets, there is so much blood\u2026 And throughout all this time, mind you, the nurse is not wearing gloves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the doctor arrived, Kranendonk says Stegemann was told she would be given \u201cmedicine\u201d and was asked whether that was okay.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-i-was-crying\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cI was crying\u201d<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Kranendonk, her grandmother did not respond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy Oma is not moving. She doesn\u2019t open her eyes. She doesn\u2019t nod. She doesn\u2019t say anything, and the doctor just said: \u2018Okay, well, I\u2019m going to proceed.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stegemann was pronounced dead approximately 10 minutes later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kranendonk says she could not determine exactly what had happened because her grandmother had been so unresponsive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She questioned whether Stegemann had died shortly before the procedure, whether the MAiD medication caused her death, or whether she had simply been deeply focused on prayer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kranendonk also claims that a heartbeat was not checked either before or after the procedure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She recalled that her grandmother had still been interacting with her earlier that morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat was concerning, though, is that that morning, I was crying. My grandmother looked at me and said, \u2018If you don\u2019t stop crying, I\u2019m not going to sleep tonight.\u2019 She said that to me on Friday morning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-family-seeks-answers-after-her-death\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Family seeks answers after her death<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Stegemann\u2019s death, Kranendonk says she learned that nurses cannot pressure patients into pursuing MAiD and that required documentation is supposed to be completed before the procedure takes place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She alleges that some of her grandmother\u2019s paperwork was completed only after her death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe did not consent on the morning of the procedure,\u201d Kranendonk said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kranendonk says she has repeatedly requested Stegemann\u2019s medical records from The Pearl but has not received them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also regrets not attempting to obtain a legal injunction that could potentially have stopped the procedure, although she says she did not know that was an option at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Removing Stegemann from the care home was also not something Kranendonk felt she could realistically do because her grandmother continued to require medical treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe live in Canada, where medical care is not always easy to get. She still needed medical care. I could not just scoop her up and bring her home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The allegations surrounding Stegemann\u2019s death remain under investigation by Belleville Police. The care home and practitioners involved have not publicly addressed Kranendonk\u2019s specific allegations, while maintaining that Stegemann had legally consented to
