Hypothesis: It\u2019s possible to make a film adaptation of a bestselling romance novel that readers will love.<\/p>\n

While the results\u00a0may<\/em>\u00a0vary, as with any book to movie adaptation, there are some key differences between\u00a0Ali Hazelwood<\/strong>\u2019s 2021 novel\u00a0The Love Hypothesis<\/em>\u00a0and Prime Video\u2019s 2026 rom-com starring\u00a0Lili Reinhart<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Tom Bateman<\/strong>, out Sept. 23<\/p>\n

For those unfamiliar with the BookTok favorite, which\u00a0began as\u00a0Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0fanfiction<\/p>\n

Holden Is Completely Absent From\u00a0The Love Hypothesis<\/em>\u00a0Movie<\/h2>\n

Almost the entire cast of characters from Hazelwood\u2019s novel make into the film, except for one beloved supporting character: Dr. Holden Rodriguez, Adam\u2019s childhood best friend who stirs up a romance with Olive\u2019s roommate and BFF Malcolm (played by\u00a0Jaboukie Young-White\u00a0<\/strong>in the film).<\/p>\n

As of a result of Holden\u2019s absence in the movie,\u00a0Olive doesn\u2019t get a warning about Dr. Tom Benton (Arty Froushan<\/strong>) and his possible nefarious intentions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Jeremy (Nicolas Duvernay) and Olive (Lili Reinhart) Never Dated in\u00a0The Love Hypothesi<\/em>s Movie<\/h2>\n

Early on in the film, it\u2019s revealed that Jeremy and Olive\u2019s past was adapted differently. While the two are exes in the novel, the movie presents Jeremy as Olive\u2019s years-long crush, but they never dated.<\/p>\n

Despite this, Olive\u2019s inspiration to fake date Adam is the same, with Olive\u2014seeing the chemistry between Jeremy and Anh (Rachel Marsh<\/strong>)\u2014realizes her best friend needs a push to date Jeremy without guilt.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

New Scene Shows Adam (Tom Bateman) and Olive (Lili Reinhart) Attending\u00a0a Cocktail Party with Fellow Scientists<\/h2>\n

An added scene in the film features Adam and Olive going on a fake date at a party being put on by a head of Adam\u2019s department, so he can prove he\u2019s putting down roots at Stanford through his relationship with Olive.<\/p>\n

At the party, Olive is asked to discuss her research about pancreatic cancer. Though nervous to speak in front of her peers, she reluctantly agrees, but is grilled by Dr. Tom Benton (Froushan), a professor at Harvard and longtime friend of Adam\u2019s, who Olive hopes will fund her research at the university.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

The Dr. Tom Benton (Arty Froushan) of It All<\/h2>\n

Speaking of Tom, fans will undoubtedly notice several details regarding the antagonist of the story are altered for the film. Along with Tom first meeting Olive in-person at a faculty picnic and the added cocktail party scene, the movie shows Tom inviting Olive to speak at the Boston science conference, rather than Olive being invited by organizers.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the pivotal scene from the book\u2014in which Olive accidentally records Tom sexually harassing her at the conference after she rejects his advances\u2014is not featured in the film.<\/p>\n

Instead, Tom visits Olive in her hotel room and threatens her, saying she has to sleep with him or he\u2019ll steal her research. But she doesn\u2019t record the encounter.<\/p>\n

Another change? Adam learns that Tom is going to fund Olive\u2019s research when Tom tells him himself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

The third act breakup in the adaptation contrasts to that in the novel in more ways than one. Though Olive emotionally calls off her fake relationship with Adam after being threatened by Tom in the book, it\u2019s Adam who breaks up with Olive in the movie.<\/p>\n

After arriving home from the Boston conference, Adam ignores Olive\u2019s calls, before sharing that their arrangement is done as he falsely believes she\u2019s going to move to Boston to work under Tom at Harvard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

How Adam Learns About the Truth About Tom\u2014And the Way He Confronts Him\u2014Are Different<\/h2>\n

In the book, Adam learns about Tom\u2019s horrific act when Olive plays him the audio recording of Tom\u2019s threatening message at a Boston restaurant, resulting in a heated moment with Adam confronting Tom.<\/p>\n

But since the audio recording plot point isn\u2019t included in the film, the situation plays out differently. While in a lab bathroom with Adam, Anh reveals the truth of what Tom did to Olive, with Adam then storming into a classroom to confront his former friend in an epic dramatic moment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Adam (Tom Bateman) and Olive (Lili Reinhart) Address Iconic Meet-Cute Much Earlier, Changing Details of Their Love Declaration<\/h2>\n

While the prologue scene in the book detailing Adam and Olive first meeting in the former\u2019s lab bathroom\u2014where Olive\u2019s vision is blurry and she can\u2019t see who she\u2019s speaking to because of her expired contacts\u2014is played out very similarly in the movie, the way it\u2019s addressed later varies.<\/p>\n

Following the pair\u2019s \u201cfake\u201d date at a cocktail party, Adam makes a comment about Olive\u2019s \u201cexpired contacts,\u201d to which she realizes he was the man from the bathroom and she confronts him, resulting in a heartfelt moment between the two.<\/p>\n

In the book, Olive also learns Adam was the mystery man after he makes a reference to that day. However, she doesn\u2019t bring up that she knows it was him. In fact, it\u2019s not addressed again until the\u00a0end<\/em>\u00a0of the book when Olive and Adam declare their love for one another and the latter reveals that he\u2019s been secretly into her ever since their first meeting years ago.<\/p>\n

But the love declaration in the film is still just as sweet, with the pair confessing their feelings and agreeing to start over\u2014forming a new hypothesis.<\/p>\n
