What if something is wrong with the baby? What if there are complications when it comes to the birth? Obviously no one\u00a0<em>likes\u00a0<\/em>to consider these things, but, as they say, forewarned is forearmed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-center code-block-2\"><\/div>\n<p>So it was with one young couple expecting their son, who they planned to name Brody. At their 24-week ultrasound, the were informed of a complication. The doctor then asked them if they wanted to abort the baby or consider other options \u2026<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-23885\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23885\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/11\/05222706\/baby-1.jpg?resize=595%2C582&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"582\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/11\/05222706\/baby-1.jpg?ssl=1\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/11\/05222706\/baby-1.jpg\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Instagram \/ Sara Heller<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sara Heller and her partner Chris were informed that Brody had a bilateral cleft lip and palate. The doctor told them that he would be born with this deformation, and that it could cause him issues with his health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The doctor then proceeded to ask them if they wanted to\u00a0<em>keep\u00a0<\/em>him.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-default code-block-3\"><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe id=\"instagram-embed-0\" class=\"instagram-media instagram-media-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Bh6tw0TDbYj\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=658&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fmodishtips.com&amp;rp=%2Farchives%2F45797#%7B%22ci%22%3A0%2C%22os%22%3A2595.300000011921%7D\" height=\"1060\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-instgrm-payload-id=\"instagram-media-payload-0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Sara and Chris, it wasn\u2019t a question at all. Of course they wanted to keep their baby! They didn\u2019t care if he looked different, and were ready to provide the help he might need if he encountered problems with his health after being born.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s more, it was their aim to spread awareness of deformities and defects that can affect newborns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is OK to be proud of your baby no matter the circumstances,\u201d Sara said,\u00a0as per HeartEternal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe wanted to change what ultrasound\/newborn\/first year pictures on our Facebook\/Instagram accounts looked like. We wanted to spread awareness of cleft lips and palates.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-image-117354 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-117354\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sbly-web-prod-shareably.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/27082632\/baby-4.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sbly-web-prod-shareably.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/27082632\/baby-4.jpg?ssl=1\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sbly-web-prod-shareably.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/27082632\/baby-4.jpg\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Instagram \/ Sara Heller<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, that\u2019s not to say Brody\u2019s condition didn\u2019t require extra care. Cleft lips and palate can make it hard for a baby to eat, drink, smile, and sometimes even to breathe. Kids with cleft lip often need therapy to learn to talk and eat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts are not sure what causes cleft lips and palates, which occurs when the tissues don\u2019t fuse during pregnancy. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2,650 babies are born with a cleft palate in the US every year. 4,440 babies are born with a cleft lip with or without the cleft palate.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe id=\"instagram-embed-1\" class=\"instagram-media instagram-media-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B7RC0oDFyVG\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=658&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fmodishtips.com&amp;rp=%2Farchives%2F45797#%7B%22ci%22%3A1%2C%22os%22%3A2597.2000000476837%7D\" height=\"1168\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-instgrm-payload-id=\"instagram-media-payload-1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sara received plenty of messages asking what was wrong with her baby\u2019s face, but used them as the perfect way to educate others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few days before New Year\u2019s Eve, a person on Instagram asked Heller \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong with his face?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI decided to educate rather than create a confrontation because that is what I want Brody to do in the future,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI will want him to educate, to be an advocate for younger cleft kids who don\u2019t have their own voice yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe id=\"instagram-embed-2\" class=\"instagram-media instagram-media-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BiKUxGtjEft\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=658&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fmodishtips.com&amp;rp=%2Farchives%2F45797#%7B%22ci%22%3A2%2C%22os%22%3A2598.2000000476837%7D\" height=\"970\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-instgrm-payload-id=\"instagram-media-payload-2\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there have been instances of outstanding kindness that Sara has witnessed too. She told how a stranger in a restaurant handed her a folded piece of paper containing a check for $1,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A note with it read, \u201cfor the beautiful baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sara and Chris put the money towards Brody\u2019s medical expenses, and the surgery he needed to repair his lip.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe id=\"instagram-embed-3\" class=\"instagram-media instagram-media-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Biw24vRFUvF\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=658&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fmodishtips.com&amp;rp=%2Farchives%2F45797#%7B%22ci%22%3A3%2C%22os%22%3A3478.800000011921%7D\" height=\"952\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-instgrm-payload-id=\"instagram-media-payload-3\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, the little boy underwent said surgery, and is now recovering well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though he will likely have to undergo a few more surgeries yet, he\u2019s happy and content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis experience has shown us just how strong the cleft community is.
