The \u201cAlex Pretti Act\u201d Claim Is More Complicated Than the Viral Graphic Suggests<\/h1>\n

A viral graphic circulating online claims that a proposed \u201cAlex Pretti Act\u201d<\/strong> would strip immunity from ICE officers and create independent oversight of federal immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n

The underlying issue is real, but the name and description in the graphic require important clarification.<\/p>\n

There Is No Federal Bill Officially Called the \u201cAlex Pretti Act\u201d<\/h2>\n

As of September 2026, congressional records do not<\/strong> show a federal bill formally titled the \u201cAlex Pretti Act.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, lawmakers have introduced several real proposals addressing accountability for federal immigration officers.<\/p>\n

One of the most significant is the Hold ICE Accountable Act of 2026<\/strong>, introduced by Rep. Haley Stevens on March 27, 2026, as H.R. 8154<\/strong>. Congressional records show that the bill was referred to the House Judiciary Committee.<\/p>\n

What the Hold ICE Accountable Act Would Do<\/h2>\n

The legislation would establish an independent Special Prosecutor<\/strong> to investigate alleged unlawful conduct by Department of Homeland Security personnel, including ICE officers.<\/p>\n

According to the bill’s sponsor, the prosecutor would have investigative and prosecutorial authority and would operate independently from the Department of Justice. The proposal would also eliminate qualified immunity for DHS officers or employees indicted by the Special Prosecutor, potentially allowing civil actions in circumstances covered by the legislation.<\/p>\n

The proposal specifically covers alleged unlawful conduct occurring on or after January 20, 2025.<\/p>\n

Why Alex Pretti Became Central to the Debate<\/h2>\n

Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and intensive-care nurse, was fatally shot by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis on January 24, 2026.<\/p>\n

His death, along with the January shooting death of Renee Good, became a major focus of national debate over federal immigration enforcement and the use of force. Reuters reported that video and other evidence raised questions about some initial official accounts of the incidents.<\/p>\n

The Hold ICE Accountable Act was introduced in March, with Rep. Stevens specifically citing the deaths of Pretti and Good when explaining the legislation.<\/p>\n

Other Accountability Proposals Also Exist<\/h2>\n

The Hold ICE Accountable Act is not the only proposal dealing with federal immigration officers.<\/p>\n

For example, Rep. Shri Thanedar introduced the Ending Qualified Immunity for ICE Agents Act<\/strong> in August 2025. That bill, H.R. 4944, was referred to the House Judiciary Committee.<\/p>\n

In January 2026, Sen. Edward Markey and Rep. Ayanna Pressley also announced the Qualified Immunity Abolition Act of 2026<\/strong>, which sought to allow civil-rights lawsuits against federal law-enforcement officers and eliminate qualified immunity as a defense in those cases.<\/p>\n

What Happens Next?<\/h2>\n

The key point is that these are proposed pieces of legislation, not laws currently in effect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

H.R. 8154 was introduced and referred to the House Judiciary Committee; it has not become federal law.<\/p>\n

So while the viral graphic connects the name of Alex Pretti with a broader movement for greater accountability of federal immigration officials, describing an enacted or officially named \u201cAlex Pretti Act\u201d<\/strong> would be inaccurate based on the congressional record currently available.<\/p>\n
