The horrors inflicted by the Nazis on millions of innocent people can sometimes feel like they belong to another lifetime.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But the people who survived them are still among us \u2014 carrying memories that must never be forgotten.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Now, another remarkable voice from that generation has fallen silent.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The final transport<\/h2>\n

Yehuda Aharon Widawski, one of Israel\u2019s oldest Holocaust survivors, has died at the age of 107. He survived Auschwitz and Nazi forced labor, lost much of his family during the Holocaust, and spent the decades that followed doing something profoundly meaningful: preserving the memory of the Jewish communities the Nazis had tried to destroy.<\/p>\n

His life was, in many ways, a testament to survival.<\/p>\n

Born in 1919 in the Polish town of Turek, Widawski grew up in a religious Jewish family before moving with his family to \u0141\u00f3d\u017a as a teenager. There, the family operated a textile business.<\/p>\n

When Nazi Germany invaded Poland and the Jewish population of \u0141\u00f3d\u017a was forced into the ghetto, Widawski and members of his family were confined there together.<\/p>\n

On August 29, 1944, the final transport from the \u0141\u00f3d\u017a Ghetto left for Auschwitz-Birkenau. Widawski\u2019s parents, Abraham and Dobrish-Leah, were murdered there along with his older brother Gabriel. His brother Chaim Moshe was later murdered at Buchenwald, while his sister Yocheved was killed at Stutthof.<\/p>\n

Only Yehuda and his brother Yehoshua survived the selection at Auschwitz.<\/p>\n

The brothers were eventually transferred to the Friedland forced labor camp near Breslau, where prisoners were forced to assemble aircraft wings for the Germans.<\/p>\n

Widawski once recalled that when prisoners were asked about their professions, most claimed to be engineers or factory workers in hopes of improving their chances of survival.<\/p>\n

He alone told the truth.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was convinced that honesty would cost me my life,\u201d he recalled during an interview with\u00a0Ynet.<\/p>\n

Instead, something unexpected happened.<\/p>\n

The German manager reportedly shouted: \u201cYou are all liars. There is only one honest man here. Give him a double portion of hot food.\u201d<\/p>\n

Widawski eventually became an informal leader among the prisoners. When the Germans increased their production quota, he devised a clever system that allowed the prisoners to hide completed aircraft wings and use them to make up for shortages, helping protect the group from punishment.<\/p>\n

But survival came at an enormous physical cost.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day we walked nine kilometers each way,\u201d Widawski recalled. \u201cIt was terrible, but we lived with the hope that we would get through it.\u201d<\/p>\n

That hope carried him to May 9, 1945, when Soviet forces liberated the camp.<\/p>\n

After the war, Widawski returned to \u0141\u00f3d\u017a, married Dobrish Wassercug, and began rebuilding his life. Their son Avraham was born in Poland.<\/p>\n

In 1950, the family immigrated to Israel and settled in Tel Aviv, where their daughter Leah was born.<\/p>\n

But Widawski never forgot the people and places he had left behind.<\/p>\n

Nearly three decades later, in 1978, he returned to Poland for the first time since the war. He had gone searching for his grandmother\u2019s grave.<\/p>\n

What he found would change the course of the rest of his life.<\/p>\n

Jewish cemeteries had been devastated, neglected and forgotten. The communities that had once filled Polish cities with Jewish life had been almost completely destroyed.<\/p>\n

Widawski began working to restore what remained.<\/p>\n

At the Jewish cemetery in \u0141\u00f3d\u017a, he used historical records to identify graves and helped restore more than 3,000 of them. He also traveled repeatedly throughout Poland, helping locate Jewish graves and preserve cemeteries and sites of memory.<\/p>\n

What began as a search for one family member\u2019s grave became a lifelong mission.<\/p>\n

His work eventually earned national recognition. In 2012, Widawski was chosen to light a torch at Israel\u2019s official Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony at Yad Vashem.<\/p>\n

And when asked years later what he considered his revenge against the Nazis, his answer was simple but incredibly powerful:<\/p>\n

\u201cMy revenge on the Nazis is that they lost, and we have the State of Israel. We are free and strong, and no one will ever be able to destroy us again.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2018, Widawski returned to Poland with 31 members of his family to retrace the milestones of his extraordinary life. The following year, he celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by family, rabbis and friends.<\/p>\n

He lived long enough to see a fifth generation of descendants.<\/p>\n

Following his death, Israeli President Isaac Herzog paid tribute to a man whose life had become a symbol of survival and remembrance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he was 104, I had the privilege of hosting Yehuda at the President\u2019s Residence together with his wonderful family. I was moved to hear his life story and about his decision to return to Poland years after immigrating to Israel in order to search for his grandmother\u2019s grave.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat search became his life\u2019s work,\u201d Herzog continued. \u201cFor decades, Yehuda worked to locate and restore Jewish cemeteries and graves in Poland and helped identify more than 3,000 graves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYehuda once said that his revenge on the Nazis was that they lost, and that we have the State of Israel,\u201d Herzog said. \u201cIndeed, his life was a remarkable testament to the victory of life, remembrance and national rebirth. May Yehuda\u2019s memory be blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n

At 107, Yehuda Aharon Widawski is gone.<\/p>\n
