But overshadowing her more than 50 years of successes are the ups and down she\u2019s experienced in her love life and with her weight.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, Hollywood\u2019s sweetheart is dropping some weight and unloading the baggage that once made her believe that her body is what makes a person lovable.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When she was only 14, Valerie Bertinelli, now 65, appeared in an episode of the TV series\u00a0Apple\u2019s Way<\/em>, and captured the attention of Norman Lear, who was responsible for many touchstone TV shows of the 1970s, like\u00a0All in the Family<\/em>,\u00a0Maude<\/em>,\u00a0Sanford and Sons<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0One Day at a Time<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Bertinelli was cast in the role of Barbara, the daughter of Bonnie Franklin\u2019s character Ann Romano, and sister to Mackenzie Philips\u2019 Julie.<\/p>\n

The pair have one son, Wolfgang, born in 1991. Bertinelli, who remained close with her ex-husband, was at Eddie\u2019s side when he died of cancer in 2020.<\/p>\n

After several stints on short-lived TV series, like\u00a0Sydney<\/em>\u00a0with Matthew Perry of\u00a0Friends<\/em>, Bertinelli then became a regular cast member in\u00a0Touched by an Angel<\/em>, playing Gloria in the last two seasons.<\/p>\n

Her talent was too much to cast aside. From 2010 to 2015, she shared the screen with the legendary Betty White, in the hugely popular TV series\u00a0Hot in Cleveland<\/em>, a comedy that followed the lives of three aging entertainers.<\/p>\n

Since, she\u2019s made the transition into celebrity chef, hosting Food Network shows like\u00a0Kids Baking Championship<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Valerie\u2019s Home Cooking<\/em>, the latter earning her two Daytime Emmy Awards.<\/p>\n

Through her storied career, fans have noticed her fluctuating weight. At 47, when she tipped the scales at 172 pounds, she became a spokesperson for Jenny Craig, and fans followed her highly publicized journey to drop the extra pounds.<\/p>\n

Two years later, she lost 50 pounds and celebrated her 49th<\/sup>\u00a0birthday by posing in a hot green bikini for a\u00a02019 cover of People.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0People\u00a0article, Bertinelli said, \u201cI started to gain weight as soon as the photo shoot ended. I was starving myself and doing twice a day workouts. Some people can look like that without doing that but not me. And there is shame for being part of the problem to make other people think they could do it. I bought into it hook, line and sinker, but I didn\u2019t take care of my head and my heart and I think it really starts with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

She revealed that being on the screen made her more vulnerable to body shaming, which started when she was very young.<\/p>\n

And even before she started acting, she said \u201cI watched my father treat my mother badly when she would gain weight.\u201d She continued, \u201cI had a 5th grade teacher poke my belly and say, \u2018You want to keep an eye on that.\u2019 So I learned at a very young age that when you gain weight, you\u2019re not lovable. And what I\u2019m learning is that your body is not what makes you lovable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now she realizes that to resolve her relationship with food, she needs to focus on \u201cthe mental and emotional work,\u201d which includes healing from the relationship she shared with Vitale, whom she was married from 2011 to 2022.<\/p>\n

Though she\u2019s hasn\u2019t been specific, Bertinelli has been candid when speaking generally about people experiencing emotional abuse in their relationships.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to emotional abuse and mental abuse, it\u2019s not talked about, because you just think, \u2018I\u2019m not being physically abused, so it\u2019s not abuse,\u2019\u201d Bertinelli said in an Instagram post in January.<\/p>\n

But through mindfulness, \u201cjournaling, therapy and especially humor,\u201d the actor and author is healing. One of the techniques she uses is rolfing, an intense manipulation of the body\u2019s connective tissue, which she says is \u201cIt\u2019s so painful, but there\u2019s a release that happens that\u2019s really helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI worked really, really, really hard. Physically definitely. I wish to God I had worked just as hard on my mental shape,\u201d\u00a0she told People. \u201cBut when I don\u2019t work on what\u2019s eating me, I\u2019m going to start eating.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a recent\u00a0Instagram post, Bertinelli posted a video, sharing her shrinking waist size with her fans. \u201cSo it\u2019s getting about time for me to probably go down another jean size. I can\u2019t believe it. And this all started in November, the month I got free,\u201d she said in the clip, referring to her divorcing Vitale. \u201cAnd I started really concentrating on my emotional and mental health. And when I started doing that, I started caring about the nutrition that I put in my body more.\u201d<\/p>\n

The post continues, \u201cThe harsh words and abuse can never be unheard and taken back, but here\u2019s the thing, I wouldn\u2019t have taken them in and believed them in the first place, if I hadn\u2019t been saying harsh and unkind words to myself first,\u201d she writes.<\/p>\n

Fans responded to her thoughtful post with comments like, \u201cSeeing you always gives me hope,\u201d and \u201cI love you Val. Little do you know how much you inspired me to get up and moving and get out of my funk of depression. I\u2019m so much happier now. You don\u2019t know how much your journey has helped me.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the same clip, Bertinelli adds that she\u2019s \u201ccut back exponentially\u201d on alcohol, that\u2019s helped her lose weight. That load that she was \u201ccarrying for protection,\u201d she adds, \u201cI don\u2019t need protection any longer. I\u2019m really starting to love myself. Deep down\u2026Please be kind to yourselves. You deserve it. We all do. We are enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

One reader replies to her post, \u201cYou are absolutely enough!! You are beautiful! While I don\u2019t know you, of course, what I see is a kind, loving mom and mentor (those kids on kids baking!! So cute) and even more than that, you are a child of God! I pray for Joy for you! You don\u2019t need to give time to those keyboard cowboys spreading their hate!!\u201d<\/p>\n

Since Bertinelli freed herself from the shackles of Vitale\u2013whom\u00a0she alluded\u00a0is a \u201cnarcissist\u201d that criticized her weight\u2013she\u2019s been asked several times if she\u2019s ready to start dating again.<\/p>\n

Speaking with\u00a0People, she says that social media allows her to have conversations with \u201ckind people.\u201d \u201cIt would be a gift to connect with people and hopefully have them feel good about themselves. Treating each other with kindness, starts with ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, if you\u2019re wondering what happened to that hot green bikini, she keeps it tucked away in a drawer. \u201cThe funny thing is, the green bikini was a size large,\u201d she said. \u201cEven at the lowest weight I\u2019ve been in decades, I was still wearing a large. Everybody\u2019s shape is what we should be celebrating.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Wolfgang, 35, he\u2019s following in his dad\u2019s footsteps as a rocker, recently opening for Metallica.<\/p>\n

Lastly, if you\u2019re thinking that Bertinelli is one of those celebrities who doesn\u2019t actually read comments on their social media, think twice.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In January, she posted a \u201cwhy did you do that\u201d clip on Instagram and one bold fan offered the obvious advice, \u201cYou need to let it go and move on. The more energy you put into this the more he is still controlling you emotionally.\u201d Bertinelli replied, saying: \u201cI have moved on Maura, thank you\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
