Shelley Fabares, 82, Who Battled a Life-Threatening Health Crisis While Her ‘M*A*S*H’ Star Husband, Mike Farrell, Stood by Her Side, Has Died<\/p>\n

Shelley Fabares spent decades as one of America’s most familiar faces, but one of the most consequential chapters of her life played out far from any camera, when her body nearly gave out, and her husband refused to leave her side.<\/h1>\n

The actress’s passing closed a story that began in front of millions of TV viewers and ended in a much quieter, more private battle. Her family confirmed the news this week, describing a woman whose warmth extended well beyond the screen.<\/p>\n

What they didn’t dwell on in that statement was just how close they came to losing her decades earlier, and how that ordeal reshaped her marriage to “M*A*S*H” star Mike Farrell for good.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Fabares died on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Los Angeles, surrounded by loved ones. She was 82. Her family, including Farrell, shared the news in a\u00a0statement to People.<\/p>\n

She was a devoted wife, cherished stepmother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, family member, and loyal friend whose warmth, generosity, humor, and grace made an enduring difference in the lives of everyone who knew her,” they said.<\/p>\n

They added that she had “a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for,” and asked for privacy while they grieve.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

From Child Star to Household Name<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Fabares was born Michele Marie Fabares in Santa Monica, California, in 1944. Her aunt, actress and singer Nanette Fabray, had already built a career in show business, and Fabares followed a similar path early on, modeling as a toddler and landing her first TV role at age 10<\/p>\n

By her teens, she’d become a household name playing Mary Stone on\u00a0The Donna Reed Show<\/i>, a role she held for five seasons. During that run, her single “Johnny Angel” hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, launching a brief but successful recording career alongside her acting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In early 1999, Fabares suffered a sudden and severe esophageal bleed and was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s emergency department. Doctors traced the episode to irreversible liver failure, according to a\u00a0detailed account from Newswise. Without a transplant, they warned, another bleed could kill her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She was placed on the transplant waiting list that April, fully aware of the odds stacked against her.\u00a0More than half the people on the liver transplant list don’t live long enough to get one<\/i>, she later said, describing herself as “living on borrowed time.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
